We have all had to study English at school, but how many of us can honestly say that we are able to have a conversation with a native English speaker? How many of us are able to understand what they say, and how many of us are able to be understood by them, even if we have the confidence to try? Hmmm, that’s right, not many .
我们在学校里都学习过英语， 但是我们当中有多少个可以和英语母语者进行毫无阻碍的对话？有多少个可以听得懂他们讲的，又有多少个可以真正的理解他们表达的意思？不是很多，对吧？

Some people I know can actually read and write English quite well, but they lack the confidence to open their mouth and speak, so when they do try, its usually not a very good performance.
我认识一些朋友，他们的英语基础很好，但是他们平时缺乏信心开口讲，所以当他们见到老外或者一些场合尝试讲的时候，就显得有点力不从心了。

One of the problems we have is making all those strange sounds they have in English, but we don’t have in Chinese. We all learn to make our “Chinese” sounds from a very early age, and our face and tongue muscles get used to that. Some of the sounds in English are very different to ours, and our muscles are not trained to make them. So we need to hear how they should sound, and copy them.
我们有一个共同的问题就是我们在学习英语的时候，要练习一些奇怪的发音，这些是在汉语中没有的。 当我们从孩童学讲话开始时，我们的脸部和舌头的肌肉已经习惯了汉语发音的方式，在英语中有些不一样的音节，我们的肌肉并没有得到锻炼，所以讲英语的时候， 听起来比较怪怪的。 所以我们需要听英语母语者是怎样的发音，然后去模仿他们。

You know, its a real problem here, because we don’t all have access to a native English speaker to interact and practice, but I have found something very interesting!!!
我知道，有一个真正的问题就是，并不是我们每个人有机会和英语母语者去相互沟通和练习语言，但是我找到了一些有趣的方法适合每一个想把英语学好的人。

There is a new product out called FacePhonics™ which has all the sounds of English, spoken by a native English speaker, and you get to see a close-up video of the girl’s mouth while she’s speaking. This is very useful because, I don’t know about you, but when I hear a sound in English that I’m not sure about, the first thing I do is ask the person to say it again and I look at their face to see “how” they make it.
我找到一个学习语言新的产品叫“FacePhonics™” 它涵盖了英语中所有的发音， 跟着美国VOA播音员练英语纯正发音，你可以通过视频近距离镜头观察她是怎样发音的，然后模仿。 我觉得这种方法比较有效，因为当我跟老外交流时听到某个个单词我不太确定它的意思时，首先我会要求对方再讲一遍，我会观察他们的脸部和嘴巴是怎样发音。

Each sound has many examples of English words that use each sound, so you get to learn hundreds of English words too.
每个音节都有许多英语单词做辅助，你在练习地道发音的同时，你还可以学到很多高频词。

I wanted to share something with you.
在这里想跟大家分享一下我的学习心得。

Many of you have commented on my shows and say that my English is quite good, thank you very much for that, but I do work very hard to get these right for you and there are quite a lot of recordings that we don’t use – but I guess that’s true of most TV  and movies.
有很多的朋友看了我的节目后给我留言说我的英语还不错，谢谢你们的支持。 但是你们不知道我在拍摄时经常会有发音的错误，有时会被NG很多次—就像大多数电视和电影拍摄一样，直到自己满意了才通过。

Learning English can sometimes seem like a big mountain to climb. There’s all those hours of studying in class or at home; endless grammar rules to learn and understand; lists and lists of words to remember; strange and unusual sounds to make and an even more strange way of using another written language to show you how to make those sounds!
学习英语有时就像攀登一座很高的山峰。 要花很多的时间在课堂里或家里去学习永无止境的语法规则， 要记住大量的词汇；用我们不太习惯的国际音标去发音，最终也只是哑巴英语， 开不了口。

No wonder people give up.
难怪很多人会放弃呢

But I want to tell you that you don’t always need to do these things to be good at English – I didn’t!
但是我想分享的是你不需要做上述的工作，也一样可以掌握很好的英语技能—我就是一个例子。

Let me tell you a bit about me and my English story.
我想跟大家分享一下我是怎样学习英语的。

When I left school, I did about the same amount of English as everyone else, and I have to tell you that “like everyone else” I couldn’t speak English when I left school. But, as I didn’t need to use English, it didn’t really matter to me.
我以前象大多人一样学习英语多是为了应付考试，当我离开学校时， 我也像“大多人”一样根本开不了口讲英语，但是，那时候因为生活和工作中没有用到英语，所以也就没有放在心上。

Some years later, I decided to try and learn English again, so I went to the local local training centre  and paid for a course. I went for about 2 months, realised it was just like school all over again, and really didn’t improve my level at all.
几年后 ，有一次心血来潮去报了个晚上的英语班，但是两个月下来，感觉跟学校里的教学差不了多少，自己的英语水平并没有提高多少。

Not wishing to give up quite so soon, I went to another, different type of class.  This one had a native English teacher, and he focused of Oral English, rather than the technical grammar points (which really only make sense if you want to learn to write better English,)
This was a bit better, but it was still taking up a lot of my spare time, and I didn’t think it was really for me, so I quit.
我不想太快的放弃，就去报了一个老外的班， 他的教学方法主要是是针对口语，而不是无聊的语法（如果你想提高英语写作水平，语法确实有帮助），我感觉我的口语比以前有一些些提高，但是上课占用了我了很多的业余时间，最好就没有坚持下来。

Being in a big new city (Shenzhen), where there are quite a few foreigners, I ended up working one of them. This was quite a challenge at first, but he was very understanding, and gradually we learned to communicate with each other. My English improved very rapidly. Talking to my Boss in English helped me learn more about how to speak, and how to put sentences together. He didn’t “teach” me, but I learned, mostly by listening, and then gradually increasing my confidence to say more and more. Also, because I could now “hear” the words in my head, I could more easily write them when I needed to.
在深圳这个大都市里有不少的外国人，机缘巧合的是我的上司是个美国人，刚开始的时候对我来说是个挑战，因为我不知道他在讲什么，同时他也听不懂我的蹩脚英语，但幸运的是他非常的理解而且很耐心， 渐渐的我们试着去和对方沟通，我发现我的英语提高很快。 跟我的上司的沟通让我学到了怎样去用地道的英语去表达，怎样去把句子组合在一起。 他并没有去“教”我怎样讲， 大部分我学到的是靠听，逐渐的我的信心增强了，我越来越可以用英语随心所欲表达我想说的。另外，我的听力也非常好， 我只要听到一个词，我就很容易准确的把它拼写出来。

Sometimes my Boss had to go back to his home town, so we used to chat on MSN or QQ, but text only. Although my English writing had improved, there is no substitute for listening and speaking, which I can honestly say was the most important breakthrough in my English story. I realised that you don’t really need to “study” English, you need to “Do it!!”
有时我的上司需要回美国时，我们就会在线上用MSN 或者是QQ聊，但都是打字的， 尽管我英语的书写在那时有了提高，但是我认为没有任何方法是可以代替听和说的， 我可以很诚实的讲，这在我的英语学习中起到了突破性的作用。
我认为你不需要去“学习”它，你只需要的是“练习”它。

After all, when we learned putonghau when we were little, did we study rules, charaters, and other nonsense from books? Of course not! We listened to our parents, family members and frends, and tried to copy them. We did this all day, every day. This should give you some clue as to how I think we all “learn” languages. We learn with our ears and our mouths, not with our eyes!
毕竟，当我们小时候学讲话的时候，我们去学语法，音标了吗？ 当然没有， 我们是听我们父母是怎样讲的，家庭其他成员是怎样讲的，然后去模仿他们，每天这样的模仿，最后我们会讲话了，会去表达我们想要的了。我想给你一些关于学语言中“听”的启示， 因为毕竟学语言要用我们的耳朵和嘴，而不是用眼睛。
